Goal: to provide continuous sidewalks on Norwest Bay Road
and all major connector roads in West Sechelt
Nickerson Road
Connect existing sidewalks above and below Oracle Rd and make the downhill
portion of the street a consistent width in this section.
Continue the sidewalk and curb south to Norwest Bay Rd.
Mason Road
Widen the asphalt on one side from Meier Rd south to Hwy 101 and from Norwest Bay Rd north on Mason to
Reeves ensure pedestrian safety. This is a major concern for area parents!
Norwest Bay Road
Extend the sidewalk from Derby to Hwy 101.
Derby Road
Install a sidewalk from Norwest Bay Rd to just east of Baillie Rd (path to entrance of Walter Burtnick Park)
Baillie Road
Continue existing sidewalk south to Derby
Goal: to provide local recreational venues and a trail network to Sechelt.
Multi-year target – provide a full-sized rugby / soccer field with adequate off-street parking and associated
playfield amenities within West Sechelt
Continuing activities:
Improve two beach accesses per year ( or provide ‘viewpoint’ improvements
where terrain dictates) as designated in the Neighbourhood Plan. Trail Island
Drive is our 1st priority followed by the beach access below and to the eastern side of DL 2338.
Provide suitable plantings and amenities at the northeast corner of Norwest Bay Rd. and Hwy 101 to prevent
parking of boats and vehicles for sale.
Mason Rd Beach
Provide a portable toilet ( summers only) at beach park
Pedestrian pathways and bike pathways ( we propose to work with the
District to secure any available provincial grants to aid these items )
Upgrade Crowston Road right of way to provide a path/bike trail between Reeves
and Heritage roads.
Proposed work:
Road allowance graded, drainage ditches put in, lay down crusher dust/gravel to permit year round travel.
Road access presently is like clay/ swamp from October until June.
Rationale:
At present there is no trail system connecting West Sechelt and West Porpoise Bay. If this road access is
upgraded into a trail, two growing neighborhoods could be connected. Trail could give West Sechelt resident’s
access to the Shores/Kinnickinnick Park. West Porpoise Bay residents could also access Sechelt by foot faster
this way. This trail could also reduce traffic on roads as people of both neighborhoods could safely travel
without dodging traffic on Mason Road.
Establish trail from north end of Nickerson/Tyler into Sechelt.
Rationale: Much of West Sechelt’s recent and future construction starts are happening around north
Nickerson/Tyler and Tower roads. With the proposal of 61 Multi-family homes, population density will increase.
To not have any trail amenities in this area to downtown Sechelt will only increase the heavy traffic on WS
roads. Luckily, Tyler and Page road right-of-ways exist, meaning the District would only have to clear the line
and create a basic trail network down the power line right-of-way. With Claytons, Allenback and Sangara also
soon to be developing in this area, the need for a trail network is now.
Cascade Green Park – We would like to see a tiny tot area with swings, slides, sand box and other play- things
for kiddies.
Where Cascade Green trail meets Emerson road there is no ramp, it is just straight curb and ditch which
makes it hard for buggies, bikes, toddlers, etc.
A more’accessible’ solution is required
Piccadilly Park-. Move and upgrade the children’s play equipment in a lower area of the park. Lack of parking
is a serious problem. We suggest using the present children’s zone for more parking. Bleachers or seating is
definitely needed for spectators. Some dead trees also need replacing.
Silverstone Park- ensure that park and beach is ‘more accessible’ than observed in August 2007. Install a
handrail on the path to the beach. Explore alternative solutions for parking.
